Zotero MCP — Auth Setup
This MCP requires API key. Follow your provider's documentation to obtain them.
1. Get your credentials
Visit the Zotero MCP documentation or developer dashboard to generate API key. Never paste credentials into our site — add them directly to your shell environment.
2. Set environment variables
macOS / Linux — add to ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc:
export ZOTERO_API_KEY=YOUR_VALUE_HERE
export ZOTERO_LIBRARY_ID=YOUR_VALUE_HERE
export ZOTERO_LIBRARY_TYPE=YOUR_VALUE_HERE
Windows — run in Command Prompt (then restart your terminal):
setx ZOTERO_API_KEY "YOUR_VALUE_HERE"
setx ZOTERO_LIBRARY_ID "YOUR_VALUE_HERE"
setx ZOTERO_LIBRARY_TYPE "YOUR_VALUE_HERE"
3. Verify
npx claude-skills doctor
You should see ✅ next to the Zotero MCP entry.
4. Restart Claude Code
Quit and reopen Claude Code, then run /mcp list to confirm the MCP appears.
